Tibet Overland & Everest Base Camp 11Days/10NightsBEST TIME FOR TREKKINGFor trekking in the Himalaya, or visiting the mountain region or lowland plains, the best time to visit is during spring and autumn. Spring is rhododendron season while autumn brings the clearest skies after the monsoon in October and November. At these times the weather is generally mild and there is little rainfall. Summer from June to September, while not a good time to visit the monsoonal lowland plains, is an ideal time for trekking in the rain shadow region of the Himalaya. The winter months can also provide good trekking conditions but some of the higher passes will be closed due to snow. TOUR ITINERARYDay 1: Arrive KathmanduUpon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. You will complete the application for your Chinese visa. Your passport and air ticket will be collected and used to obtain the visa and reconfirm your onward travel. The highlight of the evening is a traditional dinner at one of Kathmandu’s finest Nepali restaurants. Day 2: KathmanduAfter a morning guided city tour, your leader will give a trek briefing and issue part of the Trek Pack. The afternoon is free at leisure. Day 3: Kathmandu to LhasaFly to Lhasa over some of the world’s most rugged terrain. As you fly across the great barrier of the Himalaya, the landscape changes dramatically from Nepal’s green-terraced hillsides to the high and dry barren plains of Tibet. After checking into your hotel in Lhasa, visit Barkhor Square and the Jokhang Temple, the religious and geographical centre of Lhasa, and the most sacred spot for all sects of Tibetan Buddhism. The Jokhang is encircled by the Barkhor, an 800m flagstone pathway that is both a sacred circumambulation route and part of the largest bazaar in all Tibet. Days 4–5: LhasaOver the next two days enjoy your sightseeing of Lhasa which includes the world-famous Potala Palace, the Norbulingka (Jewel Park) or Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama and some of its great monasteries such as Drepung and Sera on the outskirts of the city, which both date back to the 15th Century. Days 6–7: Lhasa to ShigatseDrive to Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city and overnight at the Kunchokling Hotel. The following day is spent exploring Shigatse’s traditional bazaar and the great monastery of Tashi Lunpo, the seat of the Panchen Lama. From Nyalam (4100m), the last truly Tibetan village, the transition from the high, dry and wild Tibetan plateau to Nepal’s green hills is breathtaking as the road twists through steep and narrow gorges that are punctuated by waterfalls. Zhangmu, also known as Khasa, is the border entry point perched on the hillside a few kilometres above the actual border. A bustling mix of Chinese, Tibetan and Sherpa, Zhangmu is the point for Chinese Immigration and Customs.
